Dr. Colin L. Soskolne was born and raised in South Africa. After 28 years with the University of Alberta, Canada, where he was professor of epidemiology in the School of Public Health, he retired as Professor Emeritus on June 30, 2013. Coinciding with his retirement, he has been appointed adjunct professor in the Faculty of Health, University of Canberra, Australia. He remains based in Canada. Dr. Soskolne obtained his BSc (1970) and BSc Honours (1971) degrees in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. He trained initially in applied mathematics and he first worked as a statistician in education research. He then moved into biostatistics, focusing on occupational cancer, both in toxicological and human studies.
After his PhD in epidemiology from the University of Pennsylvania, USA, in 1982, he moved to Canada. He was appointed Director of the Epidemiology Research Unit for Ontario Cancer Care based in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Toronto.
In 1985, Dr. Soskolne moved to the University of Alberta. There, he established and directed its epidemiology program, and then led the building of its graduate training programs.
Dr. Soskolne has authored, co-authored, edited and co-edited over 300 peer reviewed published papers, chapters, letters, books, and proceedings.
Dr. Soskolne was Accreditation Coordinator in the Dean's Office of the School of Public Health (SPH). He successfully led the self-study through its first two of three stages, contributing to the making of the University of Alberta's SPH as Canada's first accredited SPH in 2012.
His two most recent co-edited collections are: Globalisation and Ecological Integrity in Science and International Law (2011), and Human Health and Ecological Integrity: Ethics, law, and Human Rights
