Richard P. Wedeen, MD is Professor of Medicine, and Professor of Preventive Medicine and Community Health, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - the New Jersey Medical School, Newark, NJ, and Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development, Department of Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care System, East Orange, NJ. Dr. Wedeen’s major interest has been in lead poisoning with particular focus on lead-induced hypertension and renal disease in adults. His research on lead nephropathy was initiated in 1972 with the support of Irving Selikoff, and Sheldon Samuels. He has published over 130 scientific papers and two books including a history of lead poisoning entitled, Poison in the Pot: The Legacy of Lead (Southern Illinois University Press, 1984). He defined the field of “Occupational Renal Diseases” in 1984 (Am. J. Kid. Disease. 3:241-257), and more recently chaired the committee to develop medical guidelines for the management of lead-exposed adults for the Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics. He is a member of the Lead in Pregnancy Work Group for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
