Araki Shunichi

Dr. Araki, MD (Tokyo, 1966), DrMedSc (Tokyo, 1974), MSc (London, 1977) and DIH (UK, 1977), graduated at the School of Medicine of the University of Tokyo, Japan, in 1966. He also completed the MSc in Occupational Medicine course of the London School of Medicine, the University of London, in 1977.
He is now Director at the Saitama Occupational Health Promotion Center of Japan Labour Health and Welfare Organization in Saitama (since 2009), Visiting Professor at the Department of Hygiene and Epidemiology of the Juntendo School of Medicine in Tokyo (since 2009), and Adjunct Professor at the Department of Preventive Medicine of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York (since 1991).
His main career has been Professor and Chairman (1897-2001) and Professor Emeritus (since 2002) at the University of Tokyo in Japan, President and Director-General of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health in Japan (2000-2009), National Delegate for the World Summit on Safety and Health at Work (Seoul, 2008), and Chairman of the ICOH Scientific Committee on Neurotoxicology and Psycophysiology (1993-2000).
He had also served as Editor-in-Chief of the INDUSTRIAL HEALTH (2000-2009), and Associate Editor of the ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH (since 1990), AMERICAN JOURNAL OF INDUSTRIAL MEDICINE (since 1992) and INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE (1993-98).
At the moment, his publication of peer-reviewed original papers is 229 in English, and 67 papers in Japanese. He is the Editor of two distinguished monographs entitled “Neurobehavioral Methods and Effects in Occupational and Environmental Health (Academic Press, 1994)” and “Behavioral Medicine: An Integrated Biobehavioral Approach to Health and Illness (Elsevier, 1992)”.
