Casteleyn Ludwine

Ludwine Casteleyn is Doctor in Medicine, Master in Occupational Medicine aznd Hygiene, Master of Laws in Social Law, and certified in Radiation Protection. Currently she combines work as researcher at the Center for Human Genetics of the University of Leuven with work as advisor to the Belgian Federal Public Service Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment, dealing with environmental and occupational health. Her scientific work focuses on the interaction between genetic factors and occupational / environmental exposure, and on ethics and data protection. Subsequent positions as occupational physician in several plants, advisor to the European Trade Union Technical Bureau for Health and Safety (TUTB) of the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI), coordinator and participant in a number of national and European scientific projects, government advisor for the Flemish Health and environment programme, allowed her to develop her interest in Human Biomarkers, both in research and in public health surveillance, and in particular on the translation of results in policy support and evaluation. Recently she had a key role in the development of a European programme for human biomonitoring in environmental health. She chaired the European Union Technical Working Group on Human Biomonitoring for Children and the Implementation Group HBM established in the frame of the European Environment and Health Action Strategy (2003) and Plan (2004). She was Project leader of the related COPHES project funded by the European Union and collaborates with the WHO European Centre for Environment and Health on the development of health related indicators and data collection methods for monitoring the European Environment and Health Process. She serves on the Scientific Committee of the Environmental component of the French National Survey on Nutrition and Health and on the advisory board of several scientific projects. She is member of the Ethics and Philosophy Committee of the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE) and treasurer of the board of the Flemish branch of the IPPNW, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, a non-partisan federation of national medical groups in 62 countries, who share the common goal of creating a more peaceful and secure world freed from the threat of nuclear annihilation.
