Cheong Hae Kwan

Prof. Hae-Kwan Cheong is a professor and chair of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine in Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine, Suwon, Republic of Korea, since 2005. He is an environmental epidemiologist and his main area of research encompasses effect of climate change and health, especially on infectious diseases; neurotoxicology of metals including manganese, lead, and mercury; epidemiology of neurodegenerative disorders; and various issues on environmental and occupational health. Currently, his main research interest lies in the climate change and health, and he is actively involved in the researches on this issue with Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Ministry of Environment.
He was former chair of the Korean Society of Environmental Health and Toxicology, hosting body of ISEE 2010 in Seoul, Korea. He has been working as an expert consultant of Western Pacific Regional Office of World Health Organization on the series of projects on the Climate Change and Health in vulnerable countries since 2009 and has been working on the climate change and health issues in Mongolia, Papua New Guinea and Cambodia. Western Pacific region represents wide range of diversity on climate system from continental to subtropical and Pacific oceanic system. He is working on the report on the climate change and health on the Western Pacific countries, on which scientific evidence of climate change and health is mostly lacking. His work on these countries provided basis on the effect of local and regional climate system on the health of vulnerable population in these countries.
