Sardas Semra

Dr. Semra Sardas is a Professor of Toxicology in the Faculty of Pharmacy at Marmara University in Istanbul, Turkey, where she has served as Head of the Toxicology Department since 2007. Her applied research focuses on pharmacogenetics and genotoxicity in relation to environmental and lifestyle factors.

Dr. Sardas’ academic appointments include: Faculty of Pharmacy, Department of Toxicology, University of Ankara (PhD 1982); Associate Professor of Toxicology, Gazi University (1986); Faculty of Pharmacy and Professor of Toxicology Gazi University (1993). In addition, she has served as the Chairwoman of the Department of Toxicology and as the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Gazi University in Ankara. In June 2006 she moved her professorship to Marmara University in Istanbul.

From 1986 to 1987 she worked as a visiting scientist at London University’s St. Mary’s Hospital School of Medicine in the Department of Pharmacology where she focused on genetic susceptibility in drug metabolism, supported by the Turkish Scientific Research Council. In addition to pharmacogenetic research, she continued to work until 1996 on genetic toxicology as a postdoc at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the School of Medicine’s Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacogenetic Unit, sponsored by the Turkish Scientific and Technical Research Council and the British Council of Cultural Affairs.

She is member of various national and international scientific societies and was elected to the Collegium Ramazzini in 2007. She is a founder of the Turkish Society of Toxicology and was General Secretary from 1991 to 1995. At present she is Chair of the Pharmacovigilance Committee of the Turkish Ministry of Health’s Advisory Board and also serves on the Central Ethical Executive Committee. She has participated as a member of numerous scientific commissions of the Turkish Ministry of Health including the Drug License Commission. An invited speaker for international conferences, she has also chaired numerous international scientific meetings. She is a member of the editorial board of well-known scientific journals and has authored or co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications on a broad spectrum of environmental, occupational and public health topics.
