Jia Chen, ScD, is a Professor in the Department of Environmental Medicine and Public
Health as well as the Departments of Pediatrics and Oncological Science at the Icahn
School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) in New York. She is also the Director of the
Molecular Epidemiology Lab in the Senator Frank R. Lautenberg Environmental Health
Sciences Laboratory at ISMMS. She holds a ScD degree in Environmental Engineering
and Toxicology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and received her
postdoctoral training in Epidemiology from Harvard School of Public Health. Her field of
expertise is molecular epidemiology. She uses latest genomic technologies to
interrogate complex interactions between environment and human health, and develops
or validates novel epi/genomic biomarkers linking environmental exposure and disease
development. Her team has been working extensively to elucidate effects of
environment and lifestyle (e.g. endocrine disruptors, metals, stress, and diet) on the
epi/genome (e.g. transcriptome, methylome, microRNA, genomic imprinting, and
microbiome) and their ultimate impact on human diseases (e.g. cancer, reproductive
abnormalities and neurodevelopmental deficits in children). By incorporating animal
and in vitro models in population studies, her group uses transdisciplinary and
integrative approach to explore functional variations of the epi/genome that are
responsive to environmental insults and indicative of disease risk.
