Professor Mohamed Fareed Jeebhay, MBChB DOH MPhil (Epi) MPH (Occ Med) PhD, an
Occupational Medicine specialist, holds joint appointments as Professor in the School
of Public Health and Family Medicine as well as the Department of Medicine at the
University of Cape Town in South Africa. He is currently Director of the School of Public
Health and Family Medicine (SOPHFM) and Head of the Division of Occupational and
Environmental Health. He is also Associate Director (Occupational Health) of the Centre
for Occupational and Environmental Health Research, a WHO collaborating Centre
in Occupational Health at UCT. He established the occupational medicine specialist
training programme at UCT in 2006 and has co-managed the University of Michigan/
Fogarty International Centre programme aimed at promoting research and training
in occupational and environmental health in Southern Africa since 2001. He is the
chairperson of the Occupational Medicine Division and Council member of the College
of Public Health Medicine in the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.

Prof Jeebhay has been member of UCT Senate since 2005 and member of UCT
Council (2008-2012). He is an NRF-rated scientist (B-category). His major research
interests are in the field of occupational allergens and asthma with a specific focus
on characterisation of risk factors for prevention. His other research contributions
are in occupational health services development, occupational health and safety law
and worker's compensation in South Africa. He serves as editorial board member
of the Journal of Current Allergy & Clinical Immunology, South African Respiratory
Journal and the International Journal of Maritime Health. Since 1994, he has served
on many statutory committees of the Ministries of Health and Labour relating to
occupational health and safety in South Africa. His work was honoured by the American
Public Health Association (APHA) in 1998 as recipient of the International Award in
Occupational Health and Safety and more recently by the Allergy Society of South
Africa for the distinguished service award to an executive member (research portfolio)
from 2003-2012.
