Rampal Krishna Gopal

Prof. Dr Krishna Gopal Rampal is Professor of Community and Occupational Medicine and the Director of the Centre for Graduate Studies at Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences (CUCMS). Prof Rampal joined CUCMS in February 2017 after serving 6 years as Professor of Community Medicine at the Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine (PUGSOM) from February 2011 and its Dean from August 2014 until December 2016. Prof Rampal joined Perdana University after 28 years at the Department of Community Health, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) having joined UKM as a lecturer in 1982. He served the last 10 years at UKM as Professor of Occupational Health being appointed as Professor in December 2001. He worked as an Intern and Medical Officer with the Ministry of Health Malaysia between 1976 and 1980.
Prof Rampal obtained his M.B.B.S. from Agra University (India), Master of Public Health (Urban Health) from Mahidol University (Thailand), Master of Public Health in 1986 and PhD in Occupational Medicine in 1990 from Johns Hopkins University (USA). He was inducted as a Fellow of Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FFOM), Royal College of Physicians Ireland in 1995, Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, Royal College of Physicians London in 1997, Fellow of the Academy of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Malaysia in 2008 and Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Malaysia in 2011. In October 2012 he became the first Malaysian to be inducted as a Fellow of the Collegium Ramazzini. In 2004, he was awarded the National Leadership (Tokoh) Award in Occupational Safety and Health for his contribution to OSH in Malaysia.
Prof Rampal was involved in teaching both the undergraduate medical and postgraduate students in public/occupational health at UKM having supervised more than 50 postgraduate students. He has edited books in his field, written chapters in books, written scientific reports and policy documents and published articles in both in local and international journals. He is regularly invited to present papers in occupational health at local and regional scientific conferences. Prof Rampal has been involved in numerous research projects and consultancies. His research areas include risk assessment and management, work related musculoskeletal disorders and asbestos related diseases. He has been involved in developing various National Guidelines (e.g. Reproductive Health Policy and Programs in the Workplace, Occupational safety and Health Act 1994). He has sat in various committees of the Ministry of Health, National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Social Security Organization. and the Malaysian Medical Association. He was Chief Censor of the Academy of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Malaysia from 2017-2013. He is currently Chairman Board of Trustees Malaysian Medical Association Foundation (MMAF) since May 2015, Board Member Malaysian Industrial Hygiene Association (MIHA) Industrial Hygiene Certification Board since 2014 and a Member of the Academy of Medicine Malaysia Committee for Ethical Professional Practice since Jan 2015.
Prof Rampal has an avid interest in art and has been collecting works of art since 1991. He was on the Board of Trustees, National Art Gallery Malaysia, between 1998 and 2004 and Chairman of its Acquisition and Programs Committee from 2001-2004. He has curated four exhibitions of his collection of paintings of Hindu temples and has also been invited to write in exhibition catalogues, launch art exhibitions and judge art competitions.
