E-mail: hester.lipscomb@duke.edu

Dr. Hester Lipscomb is an Emeritus Professor in the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. She is an occupational injury epidemiologist. Throughout her career, she has studied health and safety issues of construction workers. Her findings regarding injury risk of pneumatic nail guns, conducted over a 15-year period with partners from the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, led to a guidance document jointly authored by NIOSH and OSHA. She has also studied fishermen, health care workers, and women employed in poultry processing. The latter led to a particular interest in the contributions of work to disparities in health. Current interests also include improving intervention evaluation in the context of occupational safety including processes used to conduct systematic reviews.
Dr. Lipscomb is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (BSN; School of Nursing and MPH in heath behavior and health education, and Ph.D. in epidemiology from the School of Public Health). Throughout her career she has used a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods and she has partnered with workers in the conduct of research.
