Donald R. Smith, M.A., Ph.D. is Professor and former Chair in the Department of Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, CA, USA. He received his M.A. in Biology from San Francisco State University, and his Ph.D. in Biology from UC Santa Cruz. He has been a participating faculty in the International Ph.D. Program: Technology, Environment and Health, through the University of Brescia School of Medicine and Surgery and School of Engineering, Brescia, Italy. He has dedicated more than 20 years investigating multiple aspects of environmental health and toxicology, including the introduction, transport and fate of metals in the environment, exposure pathways to susceptible human populations, the metabolic disposition and elimination to toxic metals within humans and experimental animal models, the neuromolecular mechanisms underlying neurotoxicity, and finally the efficacy of therapeutics for the treatment of metal toxicity. He has a long and highly productive history of professional collaborations with basic scientists, epidemiologist, and pediatric and occupational health physicians.
