Kathleen Ruff has worked extensively in the area of human rights, holding leading positions in government agencies and in civil society organisations . She was Director of the British Columbia Human Rights Commission and founding publisher of the Canadian Human Rights Reporter. She is Founder and Joint Coordinator of the Rotterdam Convention Alliance, Director of the human rights website RightOnCanada. ca and Senior Advisor on Human Rights to the Rideau Institute, an independent research and advocacy organisation in Ottawa, Canada. Her report, Exporting Harm: How Canada markets asbestos to the developing world, brought to public attention Canada's shameful conduct as propagandist for the global asbestos industry. She organized an international campaign, involving scientists, civil society activists,and asbestos victims, which succeeded in ending Canada's mining and export of asbestos. In 2011, she received the Canadian Public Health Association's National Public Health Hero Award and the Appreciation Award from the Asian Citizens Center for Environmental Health. She received the 2012 Cancer Prevention Award from the organization, Prevent Cancer Now. In 2013, she received a Special Award from the Collegium Ramazzini. In 2016, she was awarded the medal of the Quebec National Assembly for her work to ban asbestos and protect workers' health. She has published numerous articles in scientific journals, books, civil society publications, and the media on how scientific integrity and public health policy are being undermined by industry influence and the need to uphold independent science that serves the public good.
