Emily Spieler is the Edwin W. Hadley Professor of Law and Emeritus Dean at Northeastern University School of Law, Boston, Massachusetts. Her research focuses on the adequacy of compensation for work injury and disease, workplace safey, and retaliation against workers for raising safety concerns. She has published widely on issues relevant to improved protections for injured workers, and she has twice testified before the U.S. Congress regarding workers? compensation and safety-related workplace retaliation. Professor Spieler is currently Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Institute for Work and Health in Toronto, Canada, an elected member of the National Academy of Social Insurance and a member of the NASI Workers? Compensation Data Study Panel, and Chair of the Whistleblower Protection Advisory Committee, a federal advisory committee to the U.S. Department of Labor. She served previously as Chair of the Federal Adivosry Committee to the U.S. Department of Energy regarding the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA).

Prior to beginning her academic career, Professor Spieler practiced labor and employment law in Boston, Massachusetts, and in West Virginia, where she also served as commissioner of the state Workers? Compensation Fund.

More recently, she has worked closely with workers? centers and local unions in the U.S. and with the International Labour Organization to address issues involving workers? compensation, health and safety regulation, workplace retaliation and whistleblowing.

Ms Spieler received her A.B. from Harvard University and J.D. from Yale Law School.
