Dr. Somkiat Siriruttanapruk is currently a senior advisor on occupational and environmental health under the Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health (MOPH), Thailand. His previous position was the Director of Bureau of Occupational and Environmental Diseases, MOPH, Thailand. He got M.D. from Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, Thailand, and received M.Med.Sc. and Ph.D. in occupational health from the University of Birmingham, U.K. He also received a certificate of Thai Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP). In addition, he received both Thai Boards of Preventive Medicine (Occupational Medicine and Epidemiology).
Apart from his work under the Department of Disease Control, he is a member of the committee on occupational health and safety under the Thai Workmen?s Compensation Fund with duties to review, monitor, and evaluate projects supported by the Workmen?s Compensation Fund. He also works as expert advisor for the Thai Health Promotion Foundation ? providing expert advice on the project related occupational and environmental health issues. He is also the ICOH scientific committee (occupational respiratory diseases).
He has extensive expertise in occupational health surveillance, prevention of occupational respiratory diseases, and development of occupational health service system. His work includes policy development and technical advice for policy makers, stake holders and network of occupational and environmental health professionals nationally and internationally. One of his job is to develop the policy on banning of asbestos in the country.
