Hogstedt Christer

Dr. Christer Hogstedt, born in 1941, became a licensed physician from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm in 1971 and a specialist in Occupational Medicine in 1977. In 1980 he discussed his doctoral thesis on Dynamite workers at Linköping University with Professor Olav Axelson as his Senior Advisor.
From 1974 to 1981 he worked full-time at the Örebro Regional Hospital and part-time as an industrial health physician for a dynamite production company.
Dr. Hogstedt became Professor in Occupational Medicine at the Swedish National Institute of Occupational Health (NIOH) and Head of the Department of Occupational Medicine at the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm in 1982. His main research activities were occupational epidemiology with applications mainly in cancer, cardiovascular, muscular-skeletal and neuropsychological epidemiology.
From July 2001 until his retirement in August 2006, Dr. Hodstedt served as Head of the Research Department at the Swedish National Institute of Public Health (SNIPH) in Stockholm. There his research was focused on evidence-based public health interventions, policy analysis, public health effects of globalization and social epidemiology with health equity and the wider determinants of health as primary foci in high as well as low income countries.
Dr. Hogstedt gave keynote lectures, presented papers in 25 different countries and was a consultant for the World Heath Organization ten times. Since 1985 he has participated in and directed research and development programs funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), together with universities and other organizations in Central America and southern Africa. He remains active in the SIDA-funded SALTRA and WAHSA programs as a SNIPH consultant. He has been a member of the Collegium Ramazzini since its founding.
