Eulogy: Dr. Charles Xintaras, Sc.D.

Collegium Ramazzini Fellow (emeritus) Dr. Charles Xintaras passed on March 2, 2020, at the age of 91 years, 6 months, in peace at his daughter's home in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Xintaras was a native of New Bedford, Massachusetts, a graduate of Harvard University, majoring in biochemistry, a U.S. Navy corpsman in World War II, and a pioneer in the development of what became known as neurobehavioral toxicology. He received his Sc.D. in industrial hygiene from the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Xintaras led research teams at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in studies of workplace and community air pollution environments.

In the 1970s Dr. Xintaras was secunded by NIOSH to help organize and implement a program of occupational health at the Geneva headquarters of the World Health Organization. Following his retirement from the U.S. Public Health Service, Dr. Xintaras relocated to Athens, Greece, where he served as a volunteer consultant to University of Athens medical students. Fluent in English, Greek, and French, he advised faculty and students on issues of research and publications. Dr. Xintaras is survived by a daughter and a son and many friends who benefitted from his acts of kindness and generosity.
