April 15th 2021
Dear Fellows and Emeritus Fellows,
It is with pleasure that I write to you to provide the Collegium Ramazzini SPRING Update for 2021. I looked back to my Spring update from last year –and it was the beginning of the COVID-19 restrictions. We never thought we would still be here one year later. But we are all hopeful that things have taken a change for the better to allow us to meet together in October for the Collegium Ramazzini. I am sorry it is so long – but there is a lot of information to share with you. Please read more.
CR Scientific Updates
CR Statements: Two important new Collegium Ramazzini Statements have been published recently. Please visit the Collegium Ramazzini STATEMENTS page below to read them, download the files and share them with your scientific and media contacts.
Statement 26 – FRAW -Health and safety in the workplace is a human right. The International Labour Organization (ILO) should act now to implement its decision, agreed by its conference and included in its Centenary Declaration, that occupational health and safety is recognized as a Fundamental Right at Work (FRAW).
Statement 27 – Tobacco & E-cigarettes -An Ill-Considered Partnership between the American Journal of Public Health and the Tobacco Industry Threatens the Scientific Credibility of the Journal and the Integrity of the American Public Health Association
European Journal of Oncology and Environmental Health www.ejoeh.com : I ask all Fellows and Emeritus fellows to keep an eye on the EJOEH site, (www.ejoeh.com) and to share it with your academic and media contacts. Early next week you will see both the recent CR statements and the 2020 Ramazzini Days abstracts published in the Journal.
CR membership Updates
Election of Officers 2021: Please remember that this year we will be running elections for a new CR President and also membership in the Executive Council. Both elections will be run using the traditional online Election Buddy system.
CR PRESIDENT:The first election will be for a new Collegium Ramazzini President. The CR President, Dr. Philip Landrigan, was last elected in 2016 and so his term is ending in 2021.
Nominations of candidates for officer positions can come from either of two sources - either from the Executive Council or a petition signed by at least 20% of the Fellows, i.e., at least 36 active Fellows (not Emeriti). The Executive Council has identified the following two CR Fellows to run for president.
Melissa A. McDiarmid
Both are long-standing Fellows of the CR and members of the Executive Council. See their bios on the CR website for more information. Any other nominations for president can be sent for inclusion in the election by June 1. The nomination will only be valid if accompanied by the signed petition mentioned above. Nominations must be sent by June 1, 2021 and the election will be held June 10-30, 2021.
CR EXECUTIVE COUNCIL: There are three positions on the Executive Council that are up for election/re-election: Nominations for new EC members must be sent by September 1 and elections will be held Sept 10-30. Moe details will be communicated about this election, after the completion of the presidential election.
In memoriam: We are sad to inform all fellows about the death of Emeritus Fellow Dr. Vito Foa in October 2020. Click hereread the Eulogy on the CR website in the dedicated In Memoriam section.
Ramazzini Days 2021
Save the date: Ramazzini Days 2021 is scheduled for October 28-31, 2021. It is too early for us to make a final decision about the event because of COVID-19 travel limitations, but please save the date and we hope that an in-person event will be possible in Carpi this fall.
More details about the event will be available in the next CR newsletter and no matter the format (virtual/in-person or even hybrid) the online registration will be available as of mid-July. In the meantime, abstracts of oral presentations or posters regarding the scientific program may be presented to Priority Topics committee co.chair Melissa McDiarmid (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Invitation to submit nominees for the 2021 Ramazzini Award and Special Award: We
invite you to submit nominees for the 2021. The awards were put on hold
for 2020 in the virtual format – so please take some time to nominate
worthy recipients for this fall. Fellows are invited to submit
nominations to the Awards Committee by sending them to the Committee Chair Henry Anderson.
Please include some background on the nominee including why you believe
that the person deserves this award and their CV or biographical
sketch. Henry will contact you directly if more information is needed.
For more details on the nature of the awards – or see previous award
winners – click on the dedicated pages of the CR website.
