September 2021 Collegium Ramazzini News

Dear Fellows and Emeritus Fellows,

This is an important update regarding the activities of the Collegium and important deadlines for attendees of the RAMAZZINI DAYS 2021.

RAMAZZINI DAYS OCTOBER 28-31, 2021 WILL BE FULLY ONLINE

The following is a message from our President, Phil Landrigan:

Dear Fellows, Emeritus Fellows and Friends,
This past spring we were all very hopeful that with the apparent waning of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rapid uptake of vaccination it would be possible for us to have a fully in person meeting this year, or at least to have a hybrid conference in which at least some of us could come together in person in Carpi. Now however, the pandemic has reemerged.

Thus, with great reluctance, the Executive Council of the Collegium Ramazzini has come to the unanimous conclusion that it would be most unwise to have any portion of the Ramazzini Days in Carpi.  With the global spread of the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus, the realization that ‘breakthrough’ infections can occur in vaccinated people, and the high likelihood that governments will impose increasingly stringent travel restrictions in the coming weeks, we realized that there was no other choice.

Therefore, Ramazzini Days 2021 will, as it was in 2020, be a fully on-line meeting with no in-person component.  Full logistical details are presented below in this newsletter.

Many thanks to Morando Soffritti, Susannah Tilson and all the staff of the Secretariat who put in so many hours to try to make a hybrid meeting a reality.  It would have been lovely, but it is not to be.

I fully anticipate that despite these difficulties our Ramazzini Days 2021 will be a splendid and highly productive gathering.  Melissa MacDiarmid and Carol Rice have worked extremely hard to put together a robust scientific program.  We have much business to accomplish, statements to review, and new candidates to consider. We shall overcome!
Philip J. Landrigan, MD, MSc
President

RAMAZZINI AWARD 2021
Even though we will be online, we could not let another year go by without a Ramazzini Award. The Awards Committee of the Collegium Ramazzini is pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Linda S. Birnbaum, as the recipient of the 2021 Ramazzini Award.

Linda Birnbaum, Ph.D., D.A.B.T., A.T.S., is  Scientist Emeritus and Former Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and National Toxicology Program. She is currently Scholar in Residence, Nicholas School of the Environment at  Duke University. Dr. Birnbaum has been chosen as the 2021 Ramazzini Laureate in recognition of her lifetime of scientific leadership in environmental health science and equally in recognition of her advocacy –tireless and courageous work to protect people and the planet against environmental threats to health.
Dr. Birnbaum will receive the honor and deliver the 2021 Ramazzini Lecture on Saturday, October 30, 2021, online via zoom.

DUES 2021

ELECTION OF OFFICERS 2021
This year the Collegium Ramazzini will elect three councilors to serve on the Executive Council.
Voting will take place electronically using the “Election Buddy” system in use since 2013. The ballot will be distributed Monday, September 20, and may be cast until October 10.  Fellows will receive an email and link from “election buddy” inviting you to cast your ballot. If you do not receive this email, please first check your spam folder, then write to me at collegiumramazzini@gmail.com, providing an alternative email address.

The Executive Council has nominated two incumbent councilors to run for re-election (Henry Anderson and Fiorella Belpoggi). When Melissa McDiarmid becomes CR President in January 2022, a third position will open up, and so we are also including the election for the open position in this election. For the open position of councilor, we have received a nomination for Roberto Lucchini. You can read about them in the FELLOWS section of the website (the info will also be included in the ballot). www.collegiumramazzini.org/fellows/all-fellows
