SCIENTIFIC SESSION II: "HORMONALLY ACTIVE CHEMICAL EXPOSURES: RECENT FINDINGS ON HALOGENATED HYDROCARBONS, RELEVANT CHILDHOOD EXPOSURES, AND ETHICS CONSIDERATIONS" chairs: Mary Wolff (USA), Carl Cranor (USA) Sala delle Vedute, Palazzo dei Pio There are at least two generations of industrial chemicals having hormonal activity, mostly non-genotoxic. Old-age chemicals like DDT and dioxin continue to be of concern, with newly identified disorders and mechanisms of action. "Middle-aged", related POPs, have received attention recently, as well. In addition, less persistent agents have emerged in commerce and in the environment in recent decades. Some of these latter chemicals are found at relatively high levels in the general population compared with reported exposures in the workplace, though such data are scarce. Meanwhile, occupational exposures to the POPs are no longer seen. The paradigm of environmental medicine, to examine the highest exposed persons to assess health effects, is thus challenged. Some bioactive chemicals, such as PCBs, DDT, and BPA, are reported at low levels (biomarkers < umolar) yet they continue to elicit concern. Others exist at relatively high levels (>umolar). Examples of recently identified chemicals with reported biomarker levels in a range of known biological response include phthalates, perfluorocarboxylates, dichlorobenzene, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers; the last three in isolated geographical areas. While body burdens of DDT and dioxins have declined markedly over the past 4 decades, they are still detected in humans and research continues on endocrine-related health outcomes in relation to recent or long-past exposures. Therefore an international perspective on these exposures will be informative in terms of exposures and plausible health concerns. Addressing knowledge gaps, such as possible overlap in occupational and general exposure intensity, would further elucidate dose-response relationships. Childhood exposures are of greatest concern. In addition, ethical considerations are now required in terms of informed consent, biomarker measurements, storage of specimens and data, and reporting back.
